Location and History

Settled in 1849, Tooele grew from an agricultural community into an industrial center with the arrival of the Los Angeles and Salt Lake Railroad in 1904 and the International Smelting and Refining Company smelter in 1909. ¹ The city has a total area of 21.2 square miles and is surrounded by popular camping and picnic areas. ¹ Tooele is home to a regional campus of Utah State University. ¹
