Location and History
Midway sits in the Heber Valley, bisected north to south by Snake Creek, which joins the middle section of the Provo River above Deer Creek Reservoir. 1 The area was first visited by a fur-trapping expedition led by Étienne Provost in 1824, and permanent settlement was achieved in 1858-59 when settlers established several small communities. 1 In the 1860s, the upper and lower settlements merged to become Midway, named for Fort Midway, which stood halfway between the two; the site of Fort Midway is now the town square. 1
