History and Geography

Founded in 1859, Wanship was named for Chief Wanship, who helped early settlers find game and edible plants. The community served as the first county seat of Summit County from 1866 until 1872 and was home to an overland stage stop called Kimballs Stage Station. ¹ The town is located at the junction of Silver Creek and the Weber River, with the Wanship Dam creating the Rockport Reservoir to the south, built in the mid-1950s. ¹
